The Hashira are one of the most intriguing and mysterious characters in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba. Although nine of the Demon Slayer Corps’ most elite swordsmen were introduced already, seven of the Hashira made their debuts in one go.
However, many of them have not returned since. Season 2 continues. Only one Hashira will feature in this season’s spotlight, drawing attention away from the other heroes of the Demon Slayer Corps. As a refresher, let’s take a look at the introductions of each Hashira.
Every Hashira Names On-Screen Entrance
Giyu Tomioka: Water Hashira
Giyu, the first Hashira to appear in the series, was introduced in the first episode. Giyu plans to execute Tanjiro as he would any other demonic. Despite Tanjiro’s pleas, Giyu initially is not sympathetic to Nezuko is, the young woman’s sister. Giyu is impressed by Tanjiro’s battle instincts and willpower and agrees to save Nezuko’s life in the hope that Tanjiro can one day heal her. He directs Tanjiro even to search Sakonji Urokodaki for a master swordsman who will teach Tanjiro how to slay demons.
Shinobu Kocho: Insect Hashira
Shinobu makes her first appearance when she is sent with Giyu to battle the powerful demons, killing Corps members. When Shinobu meets Rui, a lower-rank Five demon, she discovers that Shinobu is physically weak to behead a demonic. Instead, her katana injects lethal poison into demons. Shinobu has a wealth of experience in poisons and antidotes, which helps her prevent Zenitsu from becoming a demon spider because of another demon’s poison.
Kyojuro Rengoku – The Flame Hashira
Ubuyashiki, leader of Demon Slayer Corps, calls the meeting and introduces the remaining Hashira. Kyojuro, the first of the new Hashira, speaks and announces that he will execute Nezuko and Tanjiro for their respective crimes of being demons and harbouring demons. Ubuyashiki declares that the Kamado brothers are to be executed; Kyojuro respectfully disagrees with this decision.
Tengen Uzui: The Sound Hashira
Tengen agrees with Kyojuro that Nezuko and Tanjiro should be executed. His first words were that he would be flamboyantly happy to execute them with maximum flamboyance. Tengen, like Kyojuro, cannot understand Ubuyashiki’s decision not to spare the Kamados. Tengen’s attitude towards Tanjiro seems to have changed after learning that Tanjiro met Kibutsuji. He now demands information about the Progenitor for Demons.
Mitsuri Kanroji: Love Hashira
Mitsuri, the gentlest Hashira so far, is deeply distressed at the idea of Tanjiro’s execution. Mitsuri is free from her anger toward Nezuko and Tanjiro and instead spends her introduction admiring her fellow Hashira. Mitsuri regrets not being able to greet Ubuyashiki properly when he appears. She decides that she will follow her master’s decision regarding Nezuko or Tanjiro.
Gyomei Himejima: Stone Hashira
Gyomei, the gentle giant always gentle, is moved to tears by his compassion for Tanjiro. He laments the cruelty of Tanjiro’s birth. Gyomei, unlike Tengen and Kyojuro, is not angry but overwhelmed by sorrow that drives him to want to execute the Kamado brothers. He wants to relieve their suffering. Gyomei tearfully confesses to Ubuyashiki his deep love and respect, but he can’t accept the decision of his master to allow Nezuko or Tanjiro to die.
Muichiro Tokito: “The Mist Hashira”
Muichiro, unlike his Hashira counterparts, could not care less about Tanjiro’s situation with Tanjiro harbouring his demon sister. Although he may say that he couldn’t care less, there is no evidence that he knows what is going on. Muichiro keeps his eyes fixed on the sky and wonders about cloud formations. He ignores the drama. Muichiro says that Ubuyashiki has announced that Nezuko, Tanjiro would be spared.
Iguro Obanai – The Serpent Hashira
Iguro is sitting in the trees, and his primary concern is that Giyu has also broken the code by stopping Shinobu from executing Nezuko during the “Natagumo Mountain Arc”. Hashira, the snake-wearing Hashira, is not a fan of Tanjiro’s. He stated that Nezuko is their sister and that they can’t trust anything he says. Surprisingly, he doesn’t argue against Ubuyashiki like other people, but he simply states that he won’t trust the Kamado siblings.
Sanemi Shinazugawa – The Wind Hashira
Sanemi, the last Hashira to be introduced to Nezuko, arrives late to meet with Nezuko’s wooden boxes in his hands. Sanemi, a violent Hashira that borders on being sadistic, tortures Nezuko through the box. His opinion is clear: all demons must be killed. Sanemi shows a surprising civilized side when Ubuyashiki arrives and treats his master with the greatest respect. Ironically, Nezuko is the most violently opposed to Nezuko living. However, Sanemi’s actions prove Nezuko’s unquestionable refusal to attack people, sparing her and Tanjiro’s lives.
