Belgium – The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken in Brussels were a 19th-century project designed for King Leopold II to complement the Castle of Laeken. At the time, advanced construction techniques using glass and metal allowed for the greenhouse complex to be conceived and then constructed by architect Alphonse Balat. Called the “Ideal Glass Palace,” the Art Nouveau-style complex features pavilions, wide arcades, and glass cupolas. The gardens inside the greenhouses include many rare plants, including some from King Leopold II’s original collection!:
