Case in point: British Columbia’s Okanagan Desert, which is considered Canada’s only true desert. The town of Osoyoos, which the desert surrounds, is also the hottest place in the country. The Okanagan Desert isn’t exactly a sprawling sea of sand, though. It is just over 19 square miles (compare that to the Sahara Desert’s 3.5 square million miles) and unfortunately, due to human encroachment, the desert is less than 9% of its original size. However, both scientists and Indigenous people in the region are now working hard to protect Canada’s little slice of desert and the hundreds of plant and animal species that are unique to the area.:
