Paris, France – The world’s first automobile race wasn’t exactly the high-speed, high-stakes level of entertainment we’re familiar with today. In 1894, cars were brand-new technology, and the average cruising speed of the “horseless carriages” which took part in the race from Paris to Rouen, Normandy, was just 11 mph. Speed wasn’t actually the deciding factor for who took home the grand prize of 5,000 francs, anyway. Instead, the 79-mile race was judged on whether the cars were safe, easy, and cost-effective to operate. Of the 100-plus entries, only 25 actually made it past the initial inspection, with 21 participating in the big event, which even featured a leisurely lunch break.:
