Boston – Founded on April 23, 1635, Boston Latin School is the oldest known school established in the United States. Initially a public secondary school for boys, the school taught Greek, Latin, and the humanities, and was primarily for college prep. Some of its most famous alumni include Samuel Adams and John Hancock – and its most famous dropout is none other than Ben Franklin. The public school finally became co-ed in 1972. It has been relocated several times but remains open today, teaching grades 7 through 12 in the Fenway neighborhood of Beantown. Admission is determined by an entrance exam, and given its impressive history, it’s no doubt quite competitive. :
