Could new Twilight movies be in the works? Stephenie Meyer, author of the bestselling Twilight saga, wants to write more books that take place in the series. So far, her Twilight books have been told from the perspective of Bella, Jacob, Edward, and Bella’s male alter ego Beau (Life and Death, anyone?).
The Twilight saga made Stephenie Meyer one of the highest selling authors of all time. Talk of more books started during her press tour for the long-awaited release of Midnight Sun, a retelling of the first Twilight book from Edward’s perspective.
Meyer said that she has some of these upcoming Twilight installments already written. For now, she says she’s in no rush to complete and release these next two Twilight books just yet.
Meyer’s first four books in the Twilight saga came out quickly, as the success of the first one led to publishers pushing for more. Midnight Sun was a passion project that began over a decade ago and was put off for quite some time before a surprise announcement that it would finally be published in 2020.
Twilight Saga books
Meyer released Twilight in 2005, and it quickly became a number 1 New York Times bestseller. The book is about a teenage girl who falls in love with a 103-year-old teenage vampire. Twilight was followed by it’s sequel New Moon in 2006, which also became a number 1 New York Times bestseller. The follow up was about the breakup and reunion of Bella & Edward.
In 2007, Meyer put out Eclipse, the third book in the saga. Eclipse, otherwise known as the one where Bella has to choose between the hot teenage vampire and the hot teenage werewolf, was followed by what was meant to be the conclusion to the saga, Breaking Dawn. Breaking Dawn broke a record for first-day book sales and was the first in the series to be partially narrated by Jacob.
In 2010, Meyer released The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, a companion novel to Eclipse told from the perspective of a young vampire Bella meets briefly. This was only the first of the add-ons to the series. In 2015, in order to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the release of the first Twilight book, Meyer put out Life and Death, a gender-swapped version of the first book.
The latest release in the Twilight series is another retelling of the first book. Midnight Sun was released just last year, and is Twilight from Edward’s perspective. Meyer plans to focus on the next two novels in the series after writing a book that doesn’t take place in the Twilight universe.
Twilight Saga movies
A film adaptation of the first Twilight book was released in 2008. It was directed by Catherine Hardwick and starred Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. The success of the first film led to a quick turnaround to release the second. New Moon came out in 2009 and broke the record for advance ticket sales on Fandango.
In 2010, Eclipse came out. The third installment broke the record for midnight premiere in Canada or the United States, a record that was previously held by New Moon. Breaking Dawn was split into two movies, and Breaking Dawn Part 1 came out in 2011, followed by Breaking Dawn Part 2 in 2012. Since the release of the last film, there have been no more Twilight movies.
New books & movies
It isn’t a question of if more Twilight books are coming, but when. Meyer hasn’t said what her next non-Twilight book will be, only that she will release it before putting out any more Twilight novels.
What we don’t know is whether these books will receive film adaptations like their predecessors. The tricky thing about a new Twilight movie is how the cast, most of whom portrayed supposedly immortal characters, have aged and are now too old to play people frozen at ages 16-20.
Perhaps a new Twilight movie could come in the form of a reboot, of which Hollywood is pretty fond of these days. Or perhaps a different approach to adapting the series could be done in the form of a television or streaming series.
